Elvis in the Army?!

January 13th, 2012 - Comments Off

When we think about celebrities nowadays we sometimes don’t think about them as human beings outside of their associated media. When we watch classic movies and access music channels through satellite companies, we don’t think of the lives of these artists outside of it all. We watch Jimmy Stewart in Vertigo or Rear Window but we neglect the part of his history where he achieved the role of Brigadier General in Vietnam. And, as an inverse, we might look at the life of a political figure like Ronald Reagan and not realize that before his ascension he was a notable movie actor. The same goes for Elvis – sure, we all know his music but few of us really know about his involvement in the Army.

When Elvis was induced into the U.S. Army he was under no illusion about his identity. He even stated that the service could do whatever it wanted with him and he demonstrated this humility time and time again during training. In many ways, he wanted to be seen as a human being outside of the music industry and his positive approach to the military demonstrated this.

While some might argue that it was all a political stunt to garner more attention for his return to music, few can argue with the facts that point to more than two years where he placed himself in danger defending his country. He even donated a sizable portion of his income to the service.
